Head protection given green light for 2017

[glow=green,2,300]4 February 2016[/glow] – Formula 1 chiefs are reportedly planning to introduce driver head protection for the 2017 season, following the latest round of talks over the matter.
According to the BBC, governing body the FIA is eager to push ahead with the 'halo' concept (pictured), aimed at deflecting debris away from the driver.
Alexander Wurz, Chairman of the Grand Prix Drivers' Association, had already made clear that drivers felt the time was right to introduce such a safety measure.
"Obviously the drivers are happy that the technical team representatives agreed for the additional head protection to come in for 2017," Wurz told the BBC.
"We will now enter the design phase, where the drivers need to be open to a slightly different visibility spectrum due to the additional structure [over the cockpit].
"I am also curious as to how the teams will make the new solution look cool and fast."
Improved driver head protection has been investigated by the FIA for a number of years, but came under scrutiny once more following the deaths Jules Bianchi and Justin Wilson.
Bianchi died in July as a result of the head injuries he sustained at the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix, while Wilson was killed a month later after being struck by debris in an IndyCar race.

Räikkönen: Halo difference 'surprisingly small'

3 March 2016 – Kimi Räikkönen says the difference made while driving with the 'halo' cockpit protection device is "surprisingly small" after he publicly debuted a prototype design during testing on Thursday.
Räikkönen appeared from the Ferrari garage with the device attached to his SF16-H and completed a lap in order for the sport to analyse the overall installation and check the visibility from the cockpit.
Formula 1's 'halo' approach is the preferred option for increased head protection as the sport continues to evaluate its introduction for 2017.
"This morning I tried the 'halo' protection device and the difference to the usual driving was surprisingly small," the Finn commented.
"The visibility is just a little bit limited at the front but I don't think this is the final version of the device, so it can be improved further."
Räikkönen returned to the track in the normal specification Ferrari and ended the day with the fastest time of pre-season testing, having clocked his best lap on a set of the Ultra Soft tyres.
"It was one of our best days of testing," he said, as he also conducted a race simulation.
"We could run without a single stop, except for the red flags on track.
"Maybe we could have been faster on some laps, but in general the feeling was fine and we are more or less happy with the way things are going.
Vettel: 'Halo' look irrelevant if it saves lives

4 March 2016 – Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel says it "doesn't matter" if the proposed 'halo' head protection device looks ugly, providing it saves the lives of drivers in the future, after trialling a prototype for the first time.
Vettel ran the device, which wraps around the cockpit in the form of three struts, at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Friday morning, after team-mate Kimi Räikkönen debuted it the day before.
Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton took to social media on Thursday night to describe the 'halo' as the "worst looking mod" in Formula 1 history, as the concept divided opinion up and down the paddock.
But Vettel reckons such a concept would have prevented the deaths of Henry Surtees, whose helmet was struck by a wheel in Formula 2 in 2009, and Justin Wilson, who hit debris in an IndyCar race last year.
"I think, first of all, to go around it's OK, you can see what you need to see," said Vettel.
"I think that we can improve the system, in terms of the aesthetics and also how much visibly is in your way, but I've also tested it in the simulator and I think you will see evolutions of [the concept] soon.
"I agree it doesn't look very nice, it's not the picture that you're used to from Formula 1 for a long time.
"But equally if it helps increase safety and save lives, there would be at least two drivers that I remember who would still be around, Henry Surtees and Justin Wilson, if we had this type of system.
"I think it can be as ugly as possible... nothing justifies not having these two guys around."
Vettel and Räikkönen both swiftly returned to standard cockpit set-ups after testing the 'halo'.
