Wednesday morning, scientists will attempt to recreate the “Big Bang” on a smaller scale.
Frank Wilczek, an MIT physicist and Nobel laureate, said that the threats came in the form of calls and e-mails; however, Wilczek is not worried.
His eyes are on the groundbreaking experiment in Europe.
“We have very exciting ideas of what might happen,” Wilczek said.
Particles will be beamed around 17 miles of underground track at nearly the speed of light. The goal is to find out what makes up the empty space in the universe.
The experiment is controversial because some fear the experiment will create a black hole that will swallow the earth.
Wilczek says that won’t happen.
“It will either be wonderful fulfillment or back to the drawing board,” Wilczek said.
The experiment is 14 years and $10 billion in the making. Ten thousand scientists have worked on the project.
While Wilczek is not worried about the threats, MIT police have been notified.

BHOPAL, India - A teenage girl in central India killed herself on Wednesday after being traumatized by media reports that a “Big Bang” experiment in Europe could bring about the end of the world, her father said.
The 16-year old girl from the state of Madhya Pradesh drank pesticide and was rushed to the hospital but later died, police said.
Her father, identified on local television as Biharilal, said that his daughter, Chayya, killed herself after watching doomsday predictions made on Indian news programs.
“In the past two days, Chayya had asked me and other relatives about the world coming to an end on September 10,” Biharilal was quoted as saying.
“We tried to divert her attention and told her she should not worry about such things, but to no avail,” he said.
For the past two days, many Indian news channels held discussions airing doomsday predictions over a huge particle-smashing machine buried under the Swiss-French border.
The machine, called the Large Hadron Collider, was switched on on Wednesday, at the start of what experts say is the largest scientific experiment in human history.
The machine smashes particles together to achieve, on a small-scale, re-enactments of the “Big Bang” that created the universe.
Leading scientists and researchers at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, said the experiment was safe. They dismissed as “pure fiction” doomsday predictions that the experiment could create anti-matter, or black holes.
But in deeply religious and superstitious India, fears about the experiment and the minor risks associated with it spread rapidly through the media.
In east India, thousands of people rushed to temples to pray and fast while others savored their favorite foods in anticipation of the world’s end.
“There were a thousand more devotees yesterday as well as today compared to (any) other normal day,” Benudhara Sahu, a temple official in Orissa state, told Reuters.
Many women and children rushed to temples and observed fasts as they prayed for deliverance, officials and witnesses said.
Assurances by scientists and the media that nothing would happen counted for nothing for housewife Rukmini Moharana.
“I visited temple, prayed to god,” Moharana said. “I am observing the fast for safety because god can only save us.”

Tive a ver mais informações sobre isto e parece que não é assim tão “catastrófico”…
Se se formarem buracos negros são possivelmente milhões de vezes mais pequenos que grãos de areia, ou seja, emitiriam pequenas quantidades de radiação e deixavam de existir.
Mas supondo que o buraco negro continuava a existir, ele foi criado dentro dos tubos à velocidade da luz e possivelmente continuaria a mover-se a essa velocidade, ou seja, num segundo o buraco negro atravessava os tubos e ia em direcção ao espaço…
Apesar das teorias apocalípticas uma grande parte dos físicos mais conhecidos como por exemplo o Stephen Hawking disse que não há perigo e que está tudo estudado e sob controlo…

Não. Só daqui a umas semanas e que vão recriar o Big Bang (parece o nome de um filme porno). Hoje fizeram só umas partículas andarem as voltas nos tubos à velocidade da luz. Foi só o aquecimento.

O Large Hadron Collider, instalado na fronteira franco-suíça, vai ser desligado até ao próximo ano devido à fuga de uma tonelada de hélio líquido. Partes da super máquina aqueceram até aos 100 graus centígrados e os bombeiros foram forçados a intrevir
A fuga aconteceu a 19 de Setembro. O hélio servia para arrefecer os ímanes responsáveis pela aceleração de partículas, e a sua fuga levou cerca de uma centena destes magnetos a aquecerem até aos 100 graus centígrados.
Em circunstâncias normais, os ímanes deviam estar submetidos a uma temperatura de 271 graus negativos para poder gerar os poderosos campos magnéticos necessários à experiência.
Os bombeiros destacados no CERN, laboratório europeu de pesquisa nuclear, foram forçados a intrevir para baixar a temperatura no túnel circular de 27 quilómetros.
O CERN afirmou em comunicado que «em nenhum momento houve vidas em risco». O laboratório revela agora que a máquina vai ser desligada e que serão necessários vários meses para investigar o que falhou no LHC e para garantir o seu funcionamento em segurança.
«Depois de termos tido um início de operações muito bem sucedido a 10 de Setembro, isto é indubitavelmente um duro golpe», afirmou Robert Aymar, o director-geral do CERN.
A máquina só voltará a ser ligada na Primavera de 2009.
O LHC, cujo projecto absorve entre 3 a 6 mil milhões de euros da França, Suíça e países parceiros, foi construido para fazer colidir partículas a elevadas velocidades, para fins de pesquisa.
Os dados a ser descobertos nas experiências a realizar com a máquina podem alterar o conhecimento que a Humanidade tem sobre a Física e a criação do Universo, e podem ainda ter aplicações práticas ao nível da produção de energia.
A imensidão e as possíveis implicações do projecto levaram-no a ser apelidado de «experiência científica do século».
