Recordar Serguei Cherbakov no Sporting

Serhiy Hennadiovych Scherbakov was born 15 August 1971 in Donetsk, Ukraine. He was touted to be one of the best up and coming stars of Ukraine in the early 90’s.

He began his career for his beloved home town club, Shakhtar Donetsk in 1988 and under the guidance of Valery Yaremchenko , made his way through the ranks at the club. He made his first team debut on June 6, 1988 in Almaty, Kazakhstan, in a USSR Soviet League game against Kairat Almaty, a game in which Shakhtar ran out 1:3 winners. Shakhtar finished a disappointing 8th in the league that season, 6 places behind rivals Dynamo Kyiv who finished 2nd.

Scherbakov’s talents didnt go unnoticed, and in 1991 he was called up to the Soviet Union’s U-20 team at the 1991 FIFA World Youth Championship in Portugal. The USSR would get to the Semi-Finals of the competition, losing out to a talented Brazil squad which included the likes of Giovane Elber and Roberto Carlos. The evntual winners of the competition would be the home nation Portugal, who also boasted an impressive squad with the likes of Rui Costa and Luis Figo making up the starting 11. Despite not winning the competition, Scherbakov would go home with the Golden Boot, finishing top goalscorer with 4 goals. Scherbakov was also called up to play for the Soviet Olympic team, making 3 appearances and scoring just the 1 goals.

In 1992, Scherbakov would win player of the season for Shakhtar Donetsk, with his fine performances for the club earning him a call up to the freshly independant Ukraine National Team. He lined up with fellow USSR Olympic team counterparts Onopko, Nikiforov, and Bezhenar. Ukraine would go on to lose the game 3-1, but Scherbakov would earn his first cap for the National team. Scherbakov would only earn 2 caps for the National team, the other coming in a 0-0 draw with the USA.

His performances were getting noticed around Europe, and in 1993, highly rated Sir Bobby Robson signed Scherbakov for Sporting Lisbon. Scherbakov became a fans favourite in Lisbon and was very highly rated by his manager. He helped sporting get through to the third round of the 1993/94 UEFA cup, where they would face off against Casino Salzburg. The first leg was played on the 24th November 1993, with Sporting winning the first tie 2-0, with Scherbakov getting himself on the scoresheet with the opening goal. Two weeks later, on a cold December night in Salzburg, Sporting Lisbon were knocked out of the UEFA cup, losing the second leg 3-0 and going out on aggregate 3-2 to Casino Salzburg.

This defeat would mean the end of Sir Bobby Robson’s reign at the Portugese giants as he would be sacked soon after the game. The manager was so highly regarded by the players and the fans, the players decided to stage a dinner in honour of the departing manager. The managers dinner would take place on the 14th December, a night which Scherbakov would never forget.

On his drive home, its understood that Scherbakov jumped a red light and suffered a traumatic crash. The effects of the crash would be absolutely devastating for Scherbakov, fracturing his skull and fracturing his spinal column in three seperate places. The accident would leave Scherbakov paralyzed from the waist down. The Resident newspaper reported that he had been over the legal alcohol limit at the time and had jumped a red light. During rehabilitation he vowed he would once again don the Sporting jersey on the pitch someday, a dream he never managed to fulfill. Sir Bobby Robson is quoted as saying:

“Had the crash not happened, Scherbakov would have gone on to become one of the best midfielders in Europe.”

He was only 22 years old.

He has undergone a series of operations and is still working on his health. He is working with several football-related charities, such as the Federation of Football that unites football lovers that have cerebral paralysis.

A tragic loss to the game, and a player with heaps of talent, Serhiy Hennadiovych Scherbakov, we welcome you to the Viktor Leonenko Hall of Fame.
