Perguntas de Fans do BVB pelo SPORTING Fans // Questions from BVB to SPORTING

Hi Slig, and welcome to the ForumSCP

My Answers:

THE DRAW

  1. What were your thoughts when you realized you were drawn into group F with Dortmund? Did you care at all or had you wished for another team from pot 2 (bar Porto for obvious reasons)? If the latter: Which one and why?

In my opinion B.Dortmund was the best team of pot 2, but I personally prefer to play against big teams, because SCP like all the Portuguese teams have a natural tendency to facilitate against more accessible opponents. Playing against a top opponent I know that the players will be concentrated to the maximum and will run twice and playing on the edge, we can not win but always sell hard the defeat.
The last example was our 1-0 win against Manchester City at home for the Europa League. We made a bad championship at that time but surprised everyone by beating a team with 10x our budget.

THE GAMES

  1. Do you have any recommendation for travelling BVB fans, i.e. restaurants and bars in which they’ll be welcomed, ideally in the city center or close to the stadium? Any Lisbon sights which you consider must-have-seen for fans who fly in and out on match day?

Close to the stadium if you like beer (stupid question, you’re German, obviously you like beer) you need to try the caravans with street food, If you want a restaurant, I recommend the Restaurant “O Magriço”. The food is good, but there is some curiosities about the spot. Magriço is a figure os portuguese history/mithology, and our National Team in England 66 World Cup was knows by “Os Magriços”. Inside the restaurante you can take some photos near a poster of Cristiano Ronaldo, where you can read that he assiduously frequented the restaurant in years he was at the Sporting’s Academy.

  2. Do you plan to travel to Dortmund for the 2nd leg?

I like a lot, but I do not have time (and time is money) to be able to go.

4. Guess the result of the 1st (Sporting-BVB) and 2nd leg (BVB-Sporting).

Sporting 1 - 0 BVB
BVB 2 - 2 Sporting

YOUR CLUB / TEAM
5. Unlike in the Bundesliga, there’s an actual title race in Liga NOS. Do your club execs / Jorge Jesus (JJ) consider the Portuguese league title more than or equally important to success in the Champions League? Can we expect your strongest team on the field or would you expect that some players get rested?

The Liga NOS is our main goal for this season because it is a title that no longer achieved for over 14 years. We got some good reinforcements in this transfer market that raised the level of the team and gives us some ambitions of go beyond the group stage, but we have to be realistic and see that we are not yet at the level of traditional winners of champions. In the group stage while there is a possibility of qualification we will present the best team, but if that isn’t possible I think JJ will rotate some players.

6. Can you characterize Sporting’s / JJs’ style of football? What is his preferred formation, if any? Is he adapting his tactics to competitions (Portuguese league versus Champions League; league or group matches versus knock out matches) or does he follow his ideas no matter what? Does he like to rotate players, does he give youth players a chance?

JJ is obsessed with team positioning so we’re a team strong in all game phases. We can consider that we play in an offensive style, however we are also aggressive on the ball in demand so we lost. JJ organize the team in a classic 4-4-2, but in which the wing midfieldrs look allways the middle, and the depth is given by the side defenses and the two strikers.

7. Who are your key players our lads should ‘fear’ the most (bar W. Carvalho), and which qualities make them so important? Which players are a potential liability and why?

The guardian Rui Patricio, the 2 (Euro Champions) center midfielders William Carvalho and Adrien, and Bryan Ruiz are the references of the last season. But we’ve great hope in Bas Dost, Campbell, Markovic, and our newest young star Gelson Martins.

THE BUNDESLIGA and BORUSSIA DORTMUND
8. Do you follow or watch the Bundesliga, bar games of Bayern Munich?

I confess that I liked to have more time to see complete games but usually I see the highlights and goals.

9. Who’s the BVB player you ‘fear’ the most if any, and why?

Reus that is the most talented player, but I fear also Aubameyang because usually our defense does not do well against fast forwards. Our center-back Ruben Semedo in a good day may be able to counter the speedest of Aubameyang, but is still very young and inexperienced in Champions League.

10. How do you rate Rafa Guerreiro (who happens to be a Benfica fan  ) ? Has he been on your radar before his rise on the international stage at the Euro 2016?

We were interested in signing him 1 year ago, but he was already highly valued. He knows how to defend, attack and is a great free kicker, I think there is not much more you can ask from a left defender.

Hi and welcome to our Forum! This is what football should always be about

THE DRAW

  1. What were your thoughts when you realized you were drawn into group F with Dortmund? Did you care at all or had you wished for another team from pot 2 (bar Porto for obvious reasons)? If the latter: Which one and why?
I’d rather play against an easier side, though Pot 2 had pretty strong teams. Maybe Sevilla was the weakest team. But we knew if we want to be in the Champions League we have to play against the best sides in Europe, and it’s great to be back among the best. We’ve been out of this competition for too much time, due to our terrible recent years (2013 was the worst of them, but we elected a new chairman and now we’re back on track and stronger than we ever were in the last decades.

THE GAMES
2. Do you have any recommendation for travelling BVB fans, i.e. restaurants and bars in which they’ll be welcomed, ideally in the city center or close to the stadium? Any Lisbon sights which you consider must-have-seen for fans who fly in and out on match day?

Bars: You should visit Bairro Alto or Cais do Sodré, two of Lisbon’s most pleasant sites by night. I personally prefer the first one.

Restaurants: Try Tico-Tico, not far from the Stadium by subway (Alvalade Station, green line; then 3 minutes walking). Great portuguese food, not very expensive for a german and well-located if you don’t have much time. Also O Magriço, closer to the Stadium (though it will be full with our supporters. But they’re good people!).

Other points of interest: If you arrive and leave on the same day, it’s good to stay near the Stadium. The neighbourhood is not very tourist-oriented, but you can visit our Shop, do a Stadium Tour and visit our Museum. We’re the second most successfull Sports Club in Europe, behind Barcelona, with over 14 000 trophies. Check it out (unfortunately there’s no English option by now…): http://www.sporting.pt/en/node/41010

3. Do you plan to travel to Dortmund for the 2nd leg?
I would love it, but it’s pretty far and expensive. I’m looking forward to buy tickets to the Madrid fixture, though.

4. Guess the result of the 1st (Sporting-BVB) and 2nd leg (BVB-Sporting).
I’m realistic, you’re better than us. But, on the other hand, we have the strongest squad in 20 years and the best coach in… I don’t know, I don’t want to be unfair, but… 50 years? Still, you have great players and it’s going to be hard for us to get any points.

We had a ridiculous 2012/13 European season (and domestic as well…) and we missed the European competitions the next year, so now we’re paying the price and must face the fact that we’re in Pot 4. I risk two BVB wins: a 1-2 in Lisbon and a 3-1 in Dortmund. Our goal is to get to the Europa League’s round of 32 and then see what happens, usually I’m not an optimistic but this year I think we can do well in Europa League, if it’s the case.

The league is our top priority. I wouldn’t mind loosing 5-0 with you twice and be champions. The last title we won was back in 2002 and it’s time we win it back. It’s not been easy: just 3 years ago we finished 7th, the worst season of our History. We lost time and space among Portuguese football as well, as the club almost ended in 2013. Porto took our place in the last decades, and until 3 or 4 years ago they were the best Portuguese side, thanks to some quality players and managers, of course, but mainly because of a corruption scheme (see here: Apito Dourado - Wikipedia).

When they were caught (but not punished) they got scared, so in the last few years Benfica took their place and are now the main backstage power, pulling the strings from behind the curtains. I don’t wanna bother you with stories of our minor league, but last year’s championship was outrageous, and showed that in Portugal it may not be enough to be the best team. In fact, we were the best side in the country (we won 3-0 in Benfica stadium, 3-1 in Porto and broke the record of points in one season in Portuguese football, with 86) but sadly an ordinary Benfica won the title, with rumours of players of other teams being bribed to make the “eagles’” way to the title easier. Also (and this was proven), it became known that their chairman always offered 4 dinners per game with no price limit for each referee, assistant referee, delegate and observer who was nominated to their matches (both A and B squads, meaning 28 meals every week). So, in just a few months, they went from being openly criticised by their fans and having their coach almost fired, to winning 15 (?) matches in a row, with some expressive results and a few “friendly” referees.

The truth is Benfica didn’t want to loose last year’s league by any means because we had signed their former coach (their board wanted to prove they were right when they let JJ go), and also because 2016 is an election year in Benfica and their chairman really wants to get reelected. Yep, sadly that’s how it works here. So, I repeat, the league is our top priority. I wouldn’t be surprised if JJ made 2 or 3 changes when we play you, but don’t expect a reserve team at all.

A very dynamic, attacking-minded 4-4-2. I think our midfielders will be William, Adrien, Markovic (right wing) and Bryan Ruiz (left wing), but I wouldn´t be surprised at all if JJ played Elias instead of Markovic against you and Real. He is a central midfielder that can also play in the wing, but has more defensive concerns than Makrovic and may be useful against strong teams.

Historically we are seen as the best youth academy in Portugal and one of the best in the world, but JJ likes to have more experienced players, so our team is a bit of a mix between youth and experience. Also, until 2013 we only played with our young starlets, now we have the money to buy some players who can make a difference, so that’s what we’ve been doing. That has been one of the changes that has put us once again on top of Portuguese football - because there can be no champions with a squad full of 20 year-olds, even if they’re good.

7. Who are your key players our lads should ‘fear’ the most (bar W. Carvalho), and which qualities make them so important? Which players are a potential liability and why?
JJ is a great coach, so the dynamics of the team are our biggest strength. For the first time since I watch football, I see Sporting with the abillity to “choke” any Portuguese side for 90 minutes if needed, until we score. It was the same when JJ was in Benfica, so it’s not luck at all. Among the players I know well (new signings not included), William is pretty good, with great vision and good tackling skills. He’s a defensive midfielder though, so don’t expect him to win games by himself. Adrien is also a good player, but far from being a star. His main abillity is his bravery. Then we have Rui Patrício, who won the Euro 2016 Best Goalkeeper Award and is in the best form of his career, and the intelligence and technique of Bryan Ruiz.

We’ve replaced almost every player in the attack, so at the moment I don’t know who is our key player. But Markovic has a tricky dribbling and pace (we know him from Benfica, he played there with JJ), and Joel Campbell is an upgrade to our former second striker Teo Gutierrez. As for Bas Dost, I think you know him better than we do. He’s no top class stricker for the Bundesliga, but I think he can do interesting things here in Portugal. Still, he has the task of making us forget about Slimani. Won’t be easy…

On the other hand, our biggest problem seems to be the right and left backs (João Pereira and Schelotto on the right, Bruno César and Marvin Zeegelaar on the left). They’re alright to play in our league, but I’m concerned with the games against you, Real, Benfica, Porto and Braga. Well, we beat Porto last week, but still…

THE BUNDESLIGA and BORUSSIA DORTMUND
8. Do you follow or watch the Bundesliga, bar games of Bayern Munich?

Yes, I saw some matches of Bayern, mainly because of Guardiola, and also some excerpts of your team, Bayer, Schalke and others. I find the Bundesliga very interesting, the reason I don’t see your league more often is due to the lack of competition. But hey, this year you’ve made some great signings, maybe you’ll surprise Bayern again

9. Who’s the BVB player you ‘fear’ the most if any, and why?
Reus, Aubameyang, Gotze, Schurrle… you name it. But above all, I fear the difference of pace and resistance between Portuguese and German teams. Your players are very well-prepared in terms of fitness. Even William and Adrien are most likely to face difficulties dealing with your strong midfield and fast players. Even against Bayer Leverkusen, last year, that was very obvious, and they’re not as good as you are. The difference is huge, we just aren’t used to play week after week against well-prepared, quality players. In Germany, even Darmstadt or Leipzig have some qualities. In Portugal it’s always Sporting, Benfica and Porto, then Braga, sometimes Guimarães followed by some one-year-wonder, and then 12 teams with 9 defenders trying not to concede and wishing for the 90th minute since the referee’s first whistle.

10. How do you rate Rafa Guerreiro (who happens to be a Benfica fan  ) ? Has he been on your radar before his rise on the international stage at the Euro 2016?
In last year’s U-21 European Championship he was the weakest link of our team, but this year he made a great Euro. He’s a young, very attacking-minded left-back and he’s going to improve even more. Some time ago there were rumours he could sign for Porto, but he was already expensive. You made a great signing, he’s just not a finished player yet and he will have to work on his deffensive abillities. Didn’t know he supports Benfica, but it doesn’t surprise me.

Bem-vindo, Willkommen Slig! :great:

THE DRAW

  1. What were your thoughts when you realized you were drawn into group F with Dortmund? Did you care at all or had you wished for another team from pot 2 (bar Porto for obvious reasons)? If the latter: Which one and why?

  2. I think we, being an historic team in Europe, although having had a few problems in the last decade, we have to face the biggest teams, and the biggest teams, like Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund are in the Champions League.
I’ll admit it was shocking seeing our club in your Group at first, because of the easier Groups that the other Portuguese Clubs had but now, I’m happy because it will be a party, and obviously there will be great games.

2. Do you have any recommendation for travelling BVB fans, i.e. restaurants and bars in which they’ll be welcomed, ideally in the city center or close to the stadium? Any Lisbon sights which you consider must-have-seen for fans who fly in and out on match day?

  1. The gardens near the Stadium are very beautiful, you’ll see them because they are very large, you have a restaurant in a small “island” there, obviously a McDonald’s . If you can handle the view of the Estádio da Luz, you have a shopping there, a big one. The Downtown, or Baixa is very beautiful with a lot of Tourists and amazing Restaurants. In that part you have also the Castle of Saint George, or Castelo de São Jorge. In Belém you have the typical pastries, the called Pastéis de Belém. Get ready to spend a little bit of money.

4. Guess the result of the 1st (Sporting-BVB) and 2nd leg (BVB-Sporting).

4.SCP 2-2 BVB (Rúben Semedo/ Bas Dost; Aubameyang x2) BVB 1-1 SCP (Reus; André)

5. Unlike in the Bundesliga, there’s an actual title race in Liga NOS. Do your club execs / Jorge Jesus (JJ) consider the Portuguese league title more than or equally important to success in the Champions League? Can we expect your strongest team on the field or would you expect that some players get rested?

  1. The main goal, last year and even more this one is to be crowned the Champions of Portugal, since 2002 we’re not Champions, so I’ll say we’re pretty hungry! We can’t underestimate the Champions League, of course, you’ll face the best players in our team, maybe Legia will face a few changes.

7. Who are your key players our lads should ‘fear’ the most (bar W. Carvalho), and which qualities make them so important? Which players are a potential liability and why?

  1. I think our key players are William Carvalho, a World Class defensive midfielder; Ruí Patrício, a true “Sportinguista” and of course, an European Champion ; Bryan Ruíz, a slow winger but with an amazing vision and feet; and possibly Joel Campbell and Bas Dost. Watch out for our “baby” Gelson, maybe you in 5/6 years you can snatch him up for 60M€!
Our liabilities are the left and right backs, when there is someone with pace, a thing you don’t have  , we face too many risks and expose the keeper to too many oportunities, but Zeegelaar and Schelotto or Pereira, our left and right backs respectively, have bad days and good days, let’s hope that in the CL they are feeling like the best.

THE BUNDESLIGA and BORUSSIA DORTMUND
8. Do you follow or watch the Bundesliga, bar games of Bayern Munich?

  1. Per round, I probably watch 2/3 matches, I like to see Herta, Hamburg and you play. Last year I saw like 60/70% of all matches because the TV of our Rival had the rights to the French, Italian and English Leagues…

9. Who’s the BVB player you ‘fear’ the most if any, and why?

Aubameyang because of his pace, ability, killer instinct, a gifted player.

10. How do you rate Rafa Guerreiro (who happens to be a Benfica fan  ) ? Has he been on your radar before his rise on the international stage at the Euro 2016?

I knew a little bit about him because of Football Manager, I didn’t knew much about him except knowing that he was a must have in any team in Football Manager.

Hey, Slig and other BVB fans. I will add some bits and pieces:

1- Real old school Sporting fans have always liked you for this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlGFM0LSS9A High Five from here to the Kings of the Ruhr :venia: Plus, your little blue Gelsenkirchen bitches robbed us blind when we played there.

2- You have our same Sportsmanship stance. We both play attacking football, rely on homegrown talent and have the most dedicated supporters of our countries. You are also often deprived of your best players and robbed by red refs, like in 2013. (I was at Wembley and Germany’s red pigs should have played 70m with 10 men).

3- I am a Borussia Moenchengladbach fan ('cause 70’s), very curious to see them in this CL season; I also would have rather played against Bayer Leverkusen. My guess is that the outcome of the matches among our two clubs will end up with 3 or 2 points for each one.

THE DRAW

  1. What were your thoughts when you realized you were drawn into group F with Dortmund? Did you care at all or had you wished for another team from pot 2 (bar Porto for obvious reasons)? If the latter: Which one and why?

1.At first sight disappointed. At the same time will be a blast playing against 2 of the better European teams. After 31 August, i´m even more excited. We have accomplished a really good team, and i think we have a shoot in the first 2.

4. Guess the result of the 1st (Sporting-BVB) and 2nd leg (BVB-Sporting).

2. They will be welcomed everywhere, if they don´t do any kind of shit.
3. I want to, but a this time is difficult to be sure.
4. SCP 2-1 BVB , BVB 1-1 SCP

7. Who are your key players our lads should ‘fear’ the most (bar W. Carvalho), and which qualities make them so important? Which players are a potential liability and why?

5. Both are important. CL because of the money, LIGA NOS because allow us to get direct in the CL group stage. Our odds to winning CL aren´t high. I should say, if needed JJ will choose LIGA NOS.
6. JJs style is very exciting. He likes to play very attacking, with lots of fluidity and positive football. His influences as a coach come mostly from Dutch school (total football) with some differences of course. He as created his own style and over the years he as capacable of improve it further. Base formation is 442, but the middle 4 as some cute evolutions. He don´t change his style a lot, sometimes changes the type of players, mantaining the same formation. He gives a chance, if the players give him garanties that they are ready to accompishing what he wants from each one on the field.
7. I think you should fear everyone. We had just lost João Mario and Slimani, and JJ will find new references till the game. You can choose between Bas Dost, Bryan Ruiz, Joel Campbel, Markovic, Gelson, Castaignos, Elias, Alan Ruiz, Adrien, William, Andre… 2 months to answer this question.

8. I try to follow, but bundesliga needs to change. Everyone knows who gonna win. Anyway, some matches are great to see. In Stadium even more. Great “stimmung”.
9. Aubameyang, Reus, Schürrle, Embele und Götze.
10. Guerreiro is a good young player. He will improve more in the future. He was in everyone´s radar.

Willkommen zu unserem Forum!

Ich spreche auch ein bisschen Deutsch aber es ist leichter für mich auf Englisch zu antworten

  1. Of the pot 2 I would say that the three most dangerous teams would be Man City, BVB Dortmund and Napoli. These 3 teams play/will play the best football of their respective leagues. Tuchel is a top coach and although you’ve lost some of your key players I would say that the pillars of the team still remain in the club and can do quite some damage to our formation.
The best outcome would have been Arsenal and Bayer Leverkusen because of their defensive liabilities.

  2. Hamburguers: Hamburgueria XXI (Av. João XXI, nr. 45A) ; Hotdogs: Frankies (Rua Dr. João Soares 8B)
Typical pre/post - match meal: Bifana at the autocaravans near the stadium. :victory:

  3. No money no funny, unfortuneatly. :inde:

  4. Ideally 2-1 in Alvalade and a draw in Dortmund but it’s a biased opinion

  5. Sporting C.P. and the fans consider the league title as the major objective of the season. You could say we are on a long dry spell. The last time we won the league was in the 2001/2002 season. We won’t play against Dortmund and Real with our best XI but the main players will surely be there. Nevertheless you should expect a strong team!

  6. As said above, we play a dynamic and offensive 442. 2 midfielders and 2 wingers that usually move to the center of the pitch with the wingbacks giving width. When we have the ball, the defensive and the midfield line play close to each other and far from our goal. Without the ball we have a good pressing and defensive organisation being compact and defending zones instead man-to-man.
JJ is true to his main tactic and usually doesn’t modify it.

  7. In my opinion our best player is Bryan Ruiz. He understands the game like few players in our team. When to play fast, when to wait for other teammates to come. His feet are amazing and he offers a lot of creativity to the team. Adrien is also a very important player in our team. He connects the defense with the attack and takes care of the defensive to offensive transitions.
The main liabilities in our team are the wingbacks.

8 ) I usually follow a few Dortmund and Bayern games per month.

  1. Obvious question with an obvious answer: Reus :venia:

  2. Keeping it short and simple: Raphael Guerreiro is the best Leftback I have seen wearing our national kit. Great feet, amazing technique, intelligent, likes to play with other teammates and is fairly competent defending. Tuchel will teach him a great deal I hope :victory:

Viel Glück in der Bundesliga! Ihr spielt den bessten Fussball in Deutschland! Jetzt ohne Pep in Bayern habt ihr die Chance den Pokal wieder zu gewinnen!

Ich bin ein Fan von Hamburger SV. Buchstäblich mein zweites Team!
Vaters Erbe

Immer sympathisierte mit Borussia 1909 Dortmund. Spieler wie Jürgen Kohler, Andreas Möller, Karl-Heinz Riedle, Heiko Herrlich und die fantastische Matthias Sammer :venia: sondern auch die historische, M Zorck und Stefan Reuter… Mit Paulo Sousa… Ich hatte ein Fan zu sein

Ola Sportinguistas,

I’m a BVB forum mate of slig’s and happy to have finally made it to this forum.

Thanks a lot for your responses to our questionnaires - I’ve learned so much more than any German journalist will cover
in the upcoming weeks and cannot wait the Champions League to start! It was a also helpful to be reminded of Dortmund’s achievements against Benfica decades ago, and to learn more details of the bribing scandals because I have to admit that I just knew very little about it.
I’m a fan of the guys from Football Leaks and remember that they told German magazine DER SPIEGEL that their main motivation comes from the corrupted football business in Portugal and elsewhere, that fans get bamboozled and betrayed. And of course I read about Jorge Mendes …

Regarding questions you might have for BVB fans, I suggest that we compile here all questions you might have for us and I subsequently post them in one batch (questionnaire) in our forum rather than posting some questions today and some questions tomorrow. Would this work for you? If so, I further suggest that you post your question(s) until next Thursday (8-Sep). Deal?

For those of you who intend to come to Dortmund for the 2nd leg: I’ve posted some links in your main CL thread http://www.forumscp.com/index.php?topic=67533.msg4354912#msg4354912 .

Sweet thanks.
Im going with a BVB fan.
Still figuring out if we’ll join the Sporting fans or the BVB fans.
Depending on the ticket availability.
Any decent place to park? Is it safe?

First thing, welcome.

Please answer this:
How Sporting is seen in germany?
How hard you think the games will be for BVB?

I think you are favorites along side Real, but we hope we can do it!

THE DRAW

  1. What were your thoughts when you realized you were drawn into group F with Dortmund? Did you care at all or had you wished for another team from pot 2 (bar Porto for obvious reasons)? If the latter: Which one and why?

For going further, I’d take other teams like Sevilha, Leverkursen. But the group, like it is, offers way better games.

2. Do you have any recommendation for travelling BVB fans, i.e. restaurants and bars in which they’ll be welcomed, ideally in the city center or close to the stadium? Any Lisbon sights which you consider must-have-seen for fans who fly in and out on match day?

Baixa (Downtown) of Lisbon. The Tejo River Zone (Rio Tejo) aswell from Cais do Sodré to Belém.

  1. Do you plan to travel to Dortmund for the 2nd leg?

Yep. To win Ofc. We do not fear.

CL is €mportant, Liga NOS is the wantwd title, altho.

His teams always adapt to the adversary (not in formation, but in strategy). If they dont, the adversary is considerably better team. In CL, with our squad solutions (bench or not), any 11 players will be good (in theory).

  1. Who are your key players our lads should ‘fear’ the most (bar W. Carvalho), and which qualities make them so important? Which players are a potential liability and why?

Many new players arrived in the ending days of the market. Not even us know which you should fear.

THE BUNDESLIGA and BORUSSIA DORTMUND
8. Do you follow or watch the Bundesliga, bar games of Bayern Munich?
9. Who’s the BVB player you ‘fear’ the most if any, and why?
10. How do you rate Rafa Guerreiro (who happens to be a Benfica fan  ) ? Has he been on your radar before his rise on the international stage at the Euro 2016?

Nop.

Reus is good.

Rafa is good too. One of best of his position. Being Lamps Fan is irrelevant for the game. More relevant is that he is Eurochamp.
