Sporting Wins Challenge Sporting Portugal came to Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J., with the purpose of winning the Barclays New York Challenge. With help from a goal by Jaime Valdes in the 48th minute of Sporting’s 2-2 tie with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday in searing 93-degree heat, it eventually was able to. The tie gave the teams 8 points each over their two games, but Sporting led because it allowed just two goals, one fewer than Tottenham. The Red Bulls finished third with 6 points. For Sporting, the game marked the end of its preseason. It opens play in Portugal’s Liga Sagres on Thursday. Tottenham has four European friendlies to play before it opens in the English Premier League and the European Champions League. Dane Richards scored on a 30-yard blast in the 68th minute and the Red Bulls beat Manchester City, 2-1. The Red Bulls put pressure on Manchester throughout the first half, firing off seven shots to Manchester’s two. Thierry Henry, who scored his first Red Bulls goal in Thursday’s loss to Tottenham, took three shots. Valdes' lifts Sporting into tie with Tottenham Sporting Lisbon came to Red Bull Arena with the sole purpose of winning Barclay's New York Challenge. Thanks to a goal by Jaime Valdes in the 48th minute of Sporting's 2-2 tie with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, they accomplished their goal. The tie gave the squads eight points each over their two games, but Sporting led because they allowed just two goals, one fewer than Tottenham. Sporting won the challenge when the Red Bulls beat Manchester City 2-1 later. "It was very good to be in a position to win this trophy," said Sporting's Nuno Coelho, a center defender who has been getting a look at midfielder throughout the preseason. "That was the main objective of our coming to America." For Sporting, the game marked the end of their preseason. They open play Denmark's Nordsjaellandin on Thursday in the first leg of the third round of Europa League qualifying. Tottenham is also nearing the end of its preseason, with four European exhibitions to play before they open the English Premier League against Manchester City on Aug. 14 and begin the European Champions League qualifying playoffs three or four days later. "We're in good shape," said Spurs coach Harry Redknapp, whose squad finished fourth in the Premier League last season to earn its spot in the Champions League playoffs. "There's still some work to be done, We need to improve if we're going to improve on last year, and this is the time to do it." The teams hardly treated the game as a preseason contest. Despite searing 93-degree heat, the teams pressured each other in both halves. Valdes' goal came when he found corralled the ball in the penalty area, spun, and knocked it just inside the right post. Tottenham's second-half substitute Jonathan Obika evened the score when he took a pass outside the box, beat a defender, and blasted it into the left side off goalkeeper Rui Patricio's outstretched hands. The teams played an energetic first half, too, each getting numerous chances off runs from beyond the box. Tottenham scored the game's first goal off one of those runs in the 24th minute as captain Robbie Keane took a pass from midfielder Niko Kranjcar about 40 yards out, dribbled into the box, and knocked it past goalkeeper Rui Patricio. Sporting came back seconds later, though, when Diogo Salomao chipped in to midfielder Matias, who hit a low header past Carlo Cudicini to tie in the 25th minute. For Valdes, scoring the decisive goal proved a nice way to introduce himself to the Sporting fans hoping to improve on last year's fourth-place finish. He played last season for Atalanta of Italy's Serie A. "I was happy to score my first goal with Sporting," Valdes said. "Now we're prepared to play our serious games." Kranjcar, with an assist and a shot for the game, said just facing tournament foes Sporting and the Red Bulls was beneficial for Spurs. "When you run in this heat, it's good for you," Kranjcar said. "You get your fitness level as high as possible. But it was a great experience, too. We had a great time, and we'll be well-prepared for our schedule."in USA Today
Tottenham 2-2 Sporting He says he would prefer to prepare for a first Champions League campaign in Newquay instead of New York. Spurs' players will have spent almost a complete day in the air, travelling more than 11,300 miles, by the time they return to London after games in California and New York. The intense 100-degree heat and stifling humidity that led to NYC health warnings have also caused boss Redknapp headaches ahead of the big kick-off. He admitted: "I would be a liar if I said it was the perfect way to prepare for the new season, because it is not. "If I had my way, I'd be in Scotland or go down to Devon and play Plymouth, Torquay or Exeter." Redknapp was given a nicer kind of problem after watching Robbie Keane star in last night's draw with Sporting. The striker, back after a loan spell at Celtic and now an Aston Villa target, scored after 24 minutes. He then set up the second for Jon Obika that ensured a share of the Barclays New York Challenge. Redknapp admitted: "Robbie is a fantastic professional, who trains hard and wants to play. "I still think he has a lot to offer. The thing is he wants to play all the time. "There is every chance he could start the season but if it doesn't work out then I am sure he will be the first one to come and tell me that he needs to play somewhere. "Robbie put in a terrific shift out there in unbelievable heat. He wants to win and demands the same level of commitment from everyone." Matias levelled for Lisbon, who went ahead through Jaime Valdes before Obika struck.TOTTENHAM STARTING XI: Cudicini, Hutton, Corluka, Walker, Naughton, Kranjcar, Huddlestone, Jenas, Bale, Taarabt, Keane.
