Era um dos cantores preferidos da minha mãe a par da Linda de Suza e do Paco Bandeira porque, segundo ela, cantavam bem e eram alentejanos (a minha mãe e toda a minha família materna são alentejanos).
Lembro-me de uma vez o Carlos Cruz o entrevistar e começar a entrevista por dizer que não gostava dele.
O Marco Paulo encaixou bem e respondeu-lhe “Pois olhe, eu gosto muito de si e do seu trabalho”.
A sua música não era a minha onda, nem de perto nem de longe, mas, inegavelmente, foi um ícone da música popular portuguesa e tinha uma excelente voz.
Partiu depois de sofrer bastante e corajosamente. Já não sofre mais.
Sem dúvida, mas com os direitos de autor mencionados, ao contrário por exemplo do Tony das camionetas!
Mas não era só ele, muitos artistas em Portugal, funcionam dessa maneira ainda hoje, América latina e do sul, Espanha, é mato nesse campo.
Quando participo num karaoke , o taras e manias, nunca falha!!
E faço aquela cena do microfone de uma mão para outra !
Tive o prazer de o conhecer pessoalmente e era uma excelente pessoa, tanto como a sua voz. Apesar de não ser apreciador da sua música, reconheço o dom com que foi bafejado e que ele trabalhou, o seu legado para a música cantada em português não pode ser negado.
Sabia que tinha tido cancro mas desconhecia que tinha lutado tanto tempo e tantas vezes contra essa doença maldita, nunca mais arranjam uma cura decente para isso. Um ícone da música portuguesa e que marcou gerações. Que descanse em paz.

Serious question: As a person who lives outside of Portugal, was he so important that cnn, cmtv, sic,and other tv stations turn their shedule around?
In Belgium if some of the leading singers would die, then there would be probably a extra journal (20 minutes), and it would be news in the journals of the day (here in belgium 13:00, 19:00 or 19:30 and then you have the late night journal time varies). Probably there would be a tribute to him on a later night with a tv-show of him or where other singers would perform songs of him.
But to be honest never heard of him before today. Maybe that I have heard songs from him when I was younger when I passed my vacation in Portugal but that is 35 years ago but I can’t remember him. I know only 3 bands of Portugal, Xuto and pontapés, the band of Sporting and the black mamba (learned to know them at eurovision and I like their songs).
He is a cultural icon in modern Portuguese music.
Starting from the early 80s, he became very famous mostly because of his image, his curly hair, and raunchy music. Some of his best hits became engraved in everyone‘s minds, whether you liked him or not.
I was born in 1980 and he‘s probably one the earliest memories I have of a popstar in Portuguese reality, back when he was all the rage.
Later in his career he became less predominant in music but eventually took on some TV shows as a presenter, but far from being universally liked.
He was somewhat of a very me me me type of person, and even got in some arguments live on TV because he wanted to be the centre of the show… which was cringe af.
He‘d been battling cancers for at least the last 20 years of his life, from one to another… very sad. And that obviously had a major impact on his career but also his persona. He rarely seemed happy, mostly moaning constantly.
Regardless, he‘s one the greats in our reality, and rightly so.

Even they have good people like players who score own-goals especially against Sporting, musician doesn’t matter of which team they are, if I like their music okay if not then not. Sometimes you have to see something outside the rivalies. I think that last word in the sentence is wrong written.
Ele começou a cantar em 1966, mas o seu primeiro sucesso ocorreu em 1978, daí o estabelimento definitivo do seu sucesso nos anos 80. Eu vim de França em 1982 e comecei logo a vé-lo na TV e ouvir na radio por essa altura. Bem que não é o estilo que gosto, mas faz parte da nossa cultura pop e tinha o meu respeito por ser o melhor nesse genero de musica.
Yes music and telenovelas is a good way to learn a foreign language. My mother learned dutch with that when she came to Belgium when she was around 15 years or something like that.
