633 minutes in league games, that’s 7 full league games and we suffered a goal in the 87th minute Vs Vitória de Setúbal on February 12th so 90 times 7 = 630 + 3 = 633.
Coming into the Semi-final Cup game we were coming off 547 minutes without suffering goals counting both 2 cup games and a few league games, we suffered a goal at the 114th minute so that record lasted 661 minutes so if we go 29 minutes without suffering a goal next week we set a new personal maximum this season with 662 minutes.
Anyway, this season’s record in league games without suffering goals was 595 set by Sporting Braga’s Paulo Santos who did not suffer a goal in the first 6 games of the season until finally suffering one in the 7th but by reaching 633 in league minutes Ricardo has already set a new record for this season according to the papers.
But truth is Benfica was 639 minutes without suffering goals between the 12th and 18th round but it used 2 or more different keepers during that streak but if you’d like you can consider that Benfica still holds the season record and it’s 6 minutes from our reach but that’s clearly the next milestone.
Pardon me, Vitória de Setúbal went 663 minutes without suffering goals beetween the 8th and 15th round, completely forgot about that, Marcelo Moretto was their keeper and up until Christmas they had the least beaten defence in Europe when they suffered only 3 goals in their first 14 games of the season when they had Moretto as their goallie, promissing José Fonte as their best centre-back and a pretty good coach in Luis Norton de Matos, if you remember they even competed briefly in the UEFA Cup.
Porto’s longuest streak this season in league games without suffering goals is their present one in which they’ve gone 411 minutes (4 games plus 51 minutes) without suffering goals and counting.
After 639 and 663 I suppose the next streak to shoot for is Victor Baia’s 715 minutes without suffering goals established between March and May of 1989, then there’s Benfica legend Manuel Bento’s 2 streaks of 716 and 748 minutes after that there’s Sporting’s all time greatest keeper Vitor Damas’ 784 league minutes (814 in all games combined) streak, then there’s Manuel Bento’s 1065 minute record and finally Victor Baia’s 1191 minutes which is the all time Portuguese league record but as you can see imortality is extremelly far away.
Closer to Ricardo’s grasp is Oliver Kahn’s personal record of 802 minutes in league games (over a 1000 in all games combined)
As you can see I’m a bit of a nut about statistics, particularly having to do with Back-4s and Goalkeepers.
