Africa’s true leader. Nobody taught you his name. ![]()
Upper Volta. One of the poorest countries on earth. A 33 year old military captain named Thomas Sankara seized power. He renamed the country Burkina Faso — land of upright people. Then he got to work.
In weeks he vaccinated 2.5 million children against meningitis, yellow fever and measles. He mobilised the army and the teachers. He did it himself.
He raised literacy from 13% to 73% in four years. Built roads and a railway without a single dollar of foreign aid. Planted 10 million trees to stop the desert advancing. Made the country food self-sufficient. In four years.
He reduced his presidential salary to $450 a month. Replaced the government Mercedes with the cheapest cars in the country. Refused air conditioning in his office — it was a luxury his people could not afford.
He said — he who feeds you controls you.
He outlawed polygamy, forced marriage and genital mutilation. Appointed women to senior government posts and recruited them into the military. In 1983. In West Africa.
He stood at the Organisation of African Unity and told the continent to repudiate its foreign debt. He called the World Bank and the IMF vestiges of colonialism. France was watching. His best friend Blaise Compaoré was watching.
One week before his death he declared — while revolutionaries as individuals can be murdered, you cannot kill ideas.
On October 15 1987 he was ambushed on his way to a meeting. He raised his hands and said — take me, I am the one you want. They shot him twelve times. He was 37 years old.
Compaoré buried him in an unmarked grave and classified his death as natural causes. French agents were documented in the capital the following day. Compaoré ruled Burkina Faso for 27 years. Every reform was reversed.
