Off-topic: Do you know if it’s the same in the NBA?
I truly don’t basketball must be the only sport I don’t follow, I hate it with all my guts 
But AI, says this: It’s usually determined by which of the teams has the better regular season record (as seedings only apply during the conference stages of the bracket), but if both have the same W-L mark, there are tiebreakers applied to work it out.
If one team won both head-to-head meetings, then they’d get it. But if they’d split their head-to-head, then it’s be the team that won its division next up, followed by the team with the better win percentage in conference games, that with the better win percentage against playoff teams in its own conference, ditto against those from the other conference and lastly, net point differential (if none of the previous ones could split them - that though hasn’t happened in recent times). Rarely does it ever go that far down though - the W-L record or head-to-head is usually enough.
